Building a Career in Business Aviation
At Stevens Aerospace, our hangars are filled with more than just jets—they’re filled with people who genuinely love what they do. Most of us in business aviation didn’t get here by accident—we got here because someone showed us what was possible.
So we decided to ask a few of our younger technicians—people who were recently in the exact same position as today’s students or career-changers—what helped them choose this path. They know what it’s like to be curious, motivated, and unsure of what’s next. And now they’re thriving in careers built on challenge, teamwork, and continuous growth.
Whether you're drawn to turning wrenches, exploring cutting-edge technology, or simply being part of something bigger, there’s a spot for you here. And the best part? You won’t be walking it alone.
Business aviation is built on mentorship, shared knowledge, and a deep-rooted culture of lifting each other up. At Stevens, we know firsthand how far you can go when someone believes in you—because we’ve been on both sides.
Meet four of our technicians who didn’t just find jobs in aviation; they found careers full of opportunity and purpose. Each of them took a different path, but they all have one thing in common: they stuck with it, stayed teachable, and turned a spark of curiosity into a calling.
From first impressions to hard-earned wisdom, here’s what they had to say.
👨🔧 Jay Keller – Aircraft Mechanic
Jay didn’t always picture himself in business aviation. He started in missionary aviation, picking up both his A&P and commercial pilot licenses. But what drew him to Stevens—and kept him here—was the ability to do the work he loved while still being there for his family.
“Being off most weekends is important to me as a husband and father,” Jay says. “That flexibility is one of the things I really value about business aviation.”
But it’s not just the schedule that matters. For Jay, it’s about the variety.
“You’re not doing the same thing every day. One day it’s flight controls, the next it’s engine performance runs. It keeps things interesting.”
If you’re just starting out, Jay keeps his advice simple:
“Be willing to learn from others. The books can only take you so far. It’s the experienced techs around you who really help you grow—if you’re not afraid to ask.”
And for students who might not even know business aviation is an option?
“This is a hands-on career where you get to learn something new every day. You’re part of a close team, and you work on aircraft that people care about. It’s a great path.”
👨🔧 Cole Pusateri – Maintenance Crew Lead
For Cole, business aviation wasn’t on the radar—until he experienced the pace, pressure, and teamwork behind it.
“What hooked me was realizing you’re not just fixing airplanes. You’re solving real problems that matter. The customers often own these jets, so there’s a personal connection to the work.”
The biggest surprise for Cole? The personal growth.
“You learn more than just technical skills. You learn how to manage people, solve logistics issues, and lead under pressure. That kind of growth was unexpected—but it’s been the best part.”
Now, as a crew lead, Cole mentors others, builds customer relationships, and keeps projects moving.
“Every day’s different. New techs to train. New challenges to figure out. I like that there’s never a dull moment.”
His advice to anyone thinking about jumping in?
“You don’t need to have it all figured out. Just start. Ask questions. Be dependable. This industry rewards people who take initiative and stay open to learning.”
And his message to the next generation?
“This is one of the best-kept secrets out there. You don’t need a four-year degree to make it in aviation. If you’re teachable and driven, the opportunities are incredible.”
👨🔧 Nolan Love – Aircraft Technician
Nolan was always fascinated by aviation, but business aviation offered something unique.
“I liked the idea that everyone on the team makes a difference. You’re not just punching a clock—you’re part of the outcome.”
What really impressed him was how much each person impacts the success of the entire team.
“It’s not just about doing your job—it’s about how well the team functions as a whole. That sense of purpose is really motivating.”
And even with the demands of the job, Nolan says life outside of work hasn’t taken a hit.
“I still make time for friends, family, and hobbies. I just talk about airplanes more than I used to,” he jokes.
For Nolan, aviation isn’t just a job—it’s a passion.
“This is something I genuinely enjoy. Every day I get to work on something that excites me.”
So what would he tell someone just starting out?
“Be ready to start small, but know there’s plenty of room to grow. If you care about doing great work and solving problems, business aviation is a great fit.”
And to his younger self?
“Soak up everything you can from the people around you. Stay curious. Keep pushing to do your best work.”
👨🔧 Isaac McCollum – Aircraft Technician
Isaac’s path started with a love of flight—but he stayed because of the people and the pace.
“I was drawn in by the freedom of the job and the personal nature of the work. In business aviation, you actually know the people you’re working with—and the customers you’re supporting.”
He immediately noticed how different the environment felt compared to larger operations.
“In the airlines, there are hundreds of people you may never meet. Here, you’re part of a tight-knit crew. That makes the work more meaningful.”
Isaac’s days are anything but predictable—and he loves that.
“One day you’re out by 3:30 and relaxing by 4. The next day you’re staying late to make sure a jet can fly that night. It keeps you on your toes.”
What keeps him coming back?
“It’s never the same job twice. You’re always learning, solving something new, and contributing to something important.”
His advice for someone just getting started?
“Don’t be afraid to try. Step outside your comfort zone. When that plane takes off and you know you helped make that happen—it’s an incredible feeling.”
And his biggest piece of wisdom?
“Slow down and get it right. Don’t cut corners. Learn every little detail, because those details will save you later.”
Ready for Takeoff?
